What is this? Who is this Guy?

All of the materials here and on the related YouTube channel are meant to be shared with anyone, anywhere, anytime.

This site and videos came to be because I started teaching online and hybrid classes. With tidal wave of phones in the classroom, I decided, "I've got to get it on their phones."

Instead of making videos just for my own classes, my goal was to make them of high enough quality to share with other teachers and students around the world.

The short-term vision is to put all of the foundational theories and concepts common to most Organizational Communication textbooks on video in bite-sized chunks.

My Background:

My research and teaching background is in organizational communication and communication studies more generally. I earned a BA from Rhode Island College (1995), an MA from California State University Northridge (1998), and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder (2003) all in Communication.

My research interests explore issues of power, ethics, leadership, culture, and crisis in organizational settings. Not surprisingly, some of my past publications focus on corporate scandals (e.g., Enron, Merck Pharmaceuticals, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, etc.). I've published this original research in peer-reviewed journals like Communication Monographs, Management Communication Quarterly, Journal of Applied Communication Research as well as case studies in other people's books.

In late 2016, I published my own book, Case Studies in Courageous Organizational Communication: Research and Practice for Effective Workplaces (Peter Lang, Inc. International Academic Publishing).  The book situates 31 case studies of name-brand organizations in existing research and provides practical next steps for pursuing courageous communication practices in professional settings.

I'm a tenured associate professor at The College at Brockport, State University of New York where the Communication Department hosts healthy undergraduate and graduate programs.

A sibling YouTube channel, Communication Coach, and accompanying website, communicationskillscoach.com, provide practical tips for up and coming professionals. I see the Organizational Communication Channel and my Communication Coach project as natural extensions of one another.

I'm also a family man and a man of faith. Ironically, it was during graduate school that I learned that books, journal articles, theories, and methods were just not enough to answer life's deepest questions. This personal background translates indirectly into all aspects of my work: I want to equip as many people as possible to make their organizations inspiring, supportive, and healthy workplaces.
